Understand the relationship
Visual explanation
Start with the relationship between neighboring units. A gallon has four quarts; a quart has two pints; a pint has two cups; and a cup has eight fluid ounces. Longer conversions combine those steps.
These are liquid-volume units. US dry pints and dry quarts use different definitions. Weight ounces also measure a different quantity, so labels such as “liquid” and “fluid” prevent real mistakes.

Move from gallons to cups.

Common mistake
Check the unit and direction
The ladder is not base ten. Moving one step does not always multiply by the same number: gallon to quart uses 4, while quart to pint and pint to cup use 2.
