Before the diagram
1. Establish capacity and unit sense
Show or name familiar containers: a measuring cup, pint carton, quart bottle, and gallon jug. Ask learners to order them by likely capacity. The goal is not exact comparison yet; it is to connect each word to a size.
State the system explicitly: this lesson uses US customary liquid units. Leave dry and Imperial units for a later comparison so the first model stays coherent.
Build the model
2. Reveal one relationship at a time
- Show the gallon as the whole.
- Reveal four quart pods and connect “quart” with “quarter.”
- Split each quart into two pints. Count 2, 4, 6, 8.
- Split each pint into two cups. Count sixteen cup markers in groups.
After each reveal, hide the labels and ask learners to reconstruct the count. Avoid presenting every number at once.
Guided practice
3. Ask questions that expose the model
- How many pints are inside one quart? Point to them.
- How many cups are inside two quarts? Show the groups before multiplying.
- If the destination unit is smaller, should the number grow or shrink?
- How could you find cups in three gallons without drawing all three?
Misconception checks
4. Use wrong answers productively
The learner may have recalled the quart count. Ask them to split each quart.
The learner may have stopped at pints. Ask what lives inside every pint.
The operation direction is wrong. Ask which unit is physically larger.
Clarify cups versus fluid ounces, and volume versus mass.
Independent evidence
5. Close with a short transfer task
Ask: “A dispenser holds 2½ gallons. How many cups can it fill?” A complete response should predict a larger count, show 2.5 × 16, state 40 cups, and include the unit.
