The word “quart” points to the relationship: a quart is a quarter of a gallon. Divide one gallon into four equal parts and each part is one quart.
This lesson refers to liquid quarts. A US dry quart is a different size, so do not use dry-volume values for milk, water, or other liquids.

Common mistake
Check the unit and direction
Do not divide when moving from gallons to quarts. A quart is smaller, so the number must grow: multiply by 4. Divide by 4 only when moving from quarts back to gallons.
